September 2012

Dear KU School of Business Friends and Family,

We are into the swing of things.  Students have settled into class routines, and campus is bustling with activities in and out of the classroom.  For all you freshmen, and moms and dads of freshmen, here is a link to some pointers I shared with high school seniors headed to college. This year's freshmen are our sesquicentennial class--their senior year will mark 150 years of KU as an institution of higher education.

Across the board, the current crop of students is among the best classes we have ever had and I look forward to the great things they will do here.  It was a pleasure to meet our new freshman admits, honors, MBA, MAcc, and Ph. D. students, and of course to welcome back our returning students.

One important group we are honored to educate is the Command Team from Ft Leavenworth.  You will be proud to hear that every future general of the US Army will go through our school's executive education because of our partnership with Ft Leavenworth.  The week long program on leadership brings to our campus colonels who will command US Army brigades or equivalent organizations and their command sergeants major, the top non-commissioned officers in those organizations.  We were fortunate to have Lieutenant General David Perkins, the Commanding General at Fort Leavenworth and Commandant of the US Army Command & General Staff College, and Brigadier General Gordon Davis, Deputy Commandant, visit us for graduation ceremonies for these programs.  In the spirit of serving those who serve us, Greg Freix, one of our faculty members, serves as faculty advisor for the KU Collegiate Veterans and as an executive board member for a new Veterans Chapter of the KU Alumni Association.  The two veterans groups are co-sponsoring a Veterans Day Run on Sunday, November 11 to raise funds for Wounded Warrior scholarships and maintenance of memorials on the KU Campus.  Please consider supporting this worthwhile project as a participant, corporate sponsor, or both.  Click here for more information.

My travels in September will take me to New York, and involve multiple trips to Wichita, and Kansas City, as well as Topeka and Leavenworth.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Online Mentoring Program
Last year the School of Business was excited to launch a formal mentoring program for undergraduate and MBA students.  The student response was good but we expect it to be great this year as the program gains exposure and we have increased freshmen enrollment within the school.  We are calling on even more alumni to sign up for this program via our Online Mentor Form.  Mentoring can be a very professionally enriching activity while it also provides you an opportunity to assist a Student Jayhawk as they make their way through college and develop their career interests and goals.

And to those of you that did sign up to participate last school year, we thank you and want you to know we still have your information.  Hopefully a match will be found for you this fall.  If you have any problem filling out the Online Mentor Form or have any questions about the program, please contact Dave Byrd-Stadler via email or at 785-864-8047.
